Ibuprofen
Indications/Uses
Relief of mild to moderate pain including rheumatic & muscular pain, backache, neuralgia, migraine, headache, dental pain, dysmenorrhoea & feverishness.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, elderly, & childn >12 yr 1 or 2 tab tds. Max: 6 tab in 24 hr.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ibuprofen, aspirin, other NSAIDs. Active or previous peptic ulcer. History of upper GI bleeding or perforation, related to previous NSAID therapy. Severe hepatic, renal or heart failure. Pregnancy (3rd trimester). Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
SLE, mixed connective tissue disease. GI disorders & chronic inflammatory intestinal disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease). History of HTN &/or heart failure/cardiac impairment, oedema. Renal & hepatic dysfunction. Bronchospasm. Concomitant w/ corticosteroids, warfarin, SSRIs, aspirin. Fructose intolerance. DM. Asthma. Pregnancy (1st & 2nd trimester), lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Non-specific allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, resp tract reactivity, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of adverse effects w/ aspirin or other NSAIDs & corticosteroids. Decreased effects of antihypertensives & diuretics. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ diuretics & ciclosporin. Enhanced effects of anticoagulants. Increased risk of GI bleeding w/ anti-platelet agents & SSRIs. May exacerbate cardiac failure, reduce GFR & increase plasma glycoside levels w/ cardiac glycosides. Potential increase in lithium & methotrexate plasma levels. Reduced effect of mifepristone. Possible increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ tacrolimus. Increased risk of haemarthroses & haematoma w/ zidovudine in HIV positive haemophiliacs. Increased risk of convulsions w/ quinolones.
